So I decided to turn my recent Blog Template 02 into a business template.

I think it turned out very well. I still love the color scheme, and I am happy with the overall layout. The navigation was a little different, than my recent stuff, but it seems to fit very well.

I might offer this in other color schemes if any one is interested.

I came up with the design for this last night. I basically wanted to combine various elements of some of my recent designs into a Blog template. While there are some reused parts, most of the design still had to be completely remade so that everything would fit together well.

I kept the footer from one of my other designs, mostly because I still don’t know what content should go there. I was not happy with the footer in my previous Blog template, but I might replace the one shown now in the future if I ever have a good idea of what to put there instead.

I like the color scheme in this one a lot. I love light designs, as well as blue, so this worked out pretty well. I also like the contrast of the sidebar, which is probably what I spent the most time on.

I have never really done much design work for blog layouts. Ryno Studios is currently powered by WordPress, but it is nothing like a blog in terms of structure and layout. I was thinking about that the other day; I can code WordPress designs into themes, but I haven’t designed any blogs. So I realized that I should probably practice making designs that follow the typical blog layout.

I love blue designs, and I really wanted to create a blue/green design. This actually came out very close to an idea I had in my head a few days ago, so I am happy about that as well.

This took much longer than my recent templates, mostly because there is so much that needs to go into a blog it seems. I tried to style as many things as possible to show the design is quite modular.

I still think the footer looks a little simple/plain, but I don’t have any ideas for that. It certainly fits the design, but I feel I should give it a little more “oomph.”

If you have any suggestions, please let me know, especially since this is my first true blog layout.

I used a neutral theme here; it started out as being blue, actually. I wanted to use a different color (since I do many blue designs), but I couldn’t decide on any other color (or colors). So neutral it became.

This one is pretty simple, and this layout style seems to be trending right now.

I spent a few hours on this one, mostly because I tried several layout style before coming to one I liked. This layout is pretty simple and straightforward. I simply keep limiting my creativity for the overall layout of my designs because I know how hard it is to code the unique layouts.

I am again using those 3D banners; they look really neat, and they also break the design up a little bit. I figure pages without a sidebar will use those banners for the main headings as well. Since the front page has a sidebar, it is shown here.

The color scheme pretty much came by accident, but I really like it. I think it fits for a catering company, but could easily be changed for other businesses trying to market their services.

This is another design for a used car dealership; this one was tailored towards the needs of my client (The Car Shop), whereas the other Used Car Dealership design was made as a template and tweaked for the client after design work was finished.

This was my first try using the headings that break out from the page (with the slight 3D effect). I admit I really like the effect. My only concern is the contrast between the dark text and the red banner; using a white text seems to have too much contrast, and the grays in between are even worse.

I spent most of my design time tweaking their logo, as the client really did not want to change it significantly. After that I spend a great deal of time coding the AJAX to pull their inventory from an external website, as there was no way to retrieve the data in simple XML/etc. form.

Note that the live version has some changes due to the client not being able to supply some content until a later date.

I was recently inspired to create a simple design that could be used to list and sell band merchandise. I knew from the start that I wanted a design that would work well for only a smaller inventory, like less than 50 items total. That is why this design would likely be the same width and height on all pages.

When I started designing this, I was just doing it in gray-scale, as my friend’s band’s merchandise only came in black with the logo printed in white. It wasn’t until the layout was fully completed that I decided to add the color and spray paint effects.

I really like the concept with the spray paint and drips, but perhaps my execution could be better. I know this motif has been done to death with band stuff, but it works well.

I did the mockup for this design about two weeks ago and submitted it on Designers’Couch.org to get some feedback. It uses elements from several of my recent designs, including the Featured Work section and the Navigation section, but I had to remake 95% of it.

I really like the color scheme; I know most people love black/dark designs, but I prefer bright ones. I guess they just match my style and personality better. Plus dark designs often suffer usability issues, especially considering how how varied monitors can be these days in terms of color calibration and brightness.

After leaving it set for almost a week, I decided I really wanted to code it as a replacement to the design I had for Ryno Studios. So I did just that. It took about 5 hours to work it into a complete website using the database and content management system I had set up. But I realized I should try to migrate this design to a WordPress design.

It really wasn’t too difficult of a process, since I was already using PHP and MySQL for my CMS (just a database and loop functions to process query results). The hardest part was actually finding out how to pull the information I wanted from WordPress, so I spent lots of time reading the docs for all sorts of function calls. I had to create a few of my own functions, but nothing too nasty. I actually started with the default template. First I deleted the pages I didn’t need, and then I removed the sidebar from all pages. After that it was just a matter of replacing my code with the WordPress code.

I had this nearly completed sometime in December 2008, but I have been waiting to release it because the people over at Valve were really taking their time about giving me permission to release a skin that uses Left 4 Dead artwork and branding. I finally received permission sometime at the start of June 2009, which is when I distributed the skin to several beta testers.

My testers were absolutely fantastic. I initially was using green as a second primary color, instead of the red that is now found throughout the skin, but one of my testers suggested I try red. After reworking the colors several times, I arrived at a color scheme I really liked, and was very usable. This is a very dark, grungy skin, but the text has excellent contrast, making this skin easy to use and comfortable to look at.
